The former Patricelli Brickworks, once a key component of Picciano’s local economy, is reimagined as a new civic and cultural destination. The project restores public access to a site that has remained closed for over forty years. Rather than preserving the area as a relic, the intervention gives it a contemporary role within the community. Historical identity and collective memory become the foundation for future development. The result is a renewed place for gathering, culture and social exchange. The new multi-purpose building is carefully integrated into the natural topography through a semi-submerged design. Acting as a connection between the street and the former industrial courtyard, it strengthens the relationship between architecture and landscape. A flexible glazed hall forms the heart of the project, accommodating a variety of cultural and public activities. Large folding openings create a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. Materials and architectural details draw inspiration from the site's industrial heritage. The intervention extends beyond the building to create a new public landscape for the community. Recreational areas, pedestrian routes and spaces for outdoor activities encourage social interaction and wellbeing. The design incorporates rain gardens and bioretention systems to manage stormwater naturally. These solutions improve environmental performance while supporting urban biodiversity. Together, architecture and landscape form a sustainable framework for the future of Picciano.
