Effective education does not come from the passive absorption of facts; yet, classes at most universities are large lectures devoted to delivering static content. The new generation of students needs a completely different approach to the university system. The challenge for the university of the future is not so much about what to teach, but how to teach.
Learning through small, interactive seminars demands the full engagement of both professors and classmates. This practice of active learning (e-learning) allows students to benefit from flexible spaces and schedules. The advantages include: fewer buildings, more green spaces, lower costs for students, and higher-quality teaching.
Poveglia is fully embedded in an extraordinarily beautiful and fascinating ecosystem: the Venetian lagoon. This unique landscape is primarily composed of waterways and small islands; what makes it truly magical is the briccole system and the presence of small boats, always framed by historic buildings in the background.
Poveglia as an e-island represents an innovative and multicultural university campus where technology meets a unique landscape. “E” stands for electronic, but also for enjoyment: Poveglia becomes a place to meet, centered around a multifunctional pier where nature plays the leading role.
We often think of islands as enclosed spaces, but the e-island overturns this idea. Poveglia can become part of a broader university system, connected to some of the most evocative locations around the world. The e-island will be an extended university: a multicultural and multidisciplinary cloud space for sharing knowledge, experiences, and dreams.
The e-island aims to become an independent “mini-world”.
