HOUSE VDB
The DB family decided to invest in a new apartment in Pescara. The purchased apartment has a conventional layout that does not take the surrounding context into account: the living area is positioned at the entrance and overlooks the uninspiring 1960s buildings, while the sleeping area is located on the east side of the apartment with views of the sea and marina. It quickly became clear that the design solution needed to invert the existing arrangement and provide the client with sea views from the living area.
The challenge was, given the fixed entrance, to avoid creating long corridors that would waste square meters on circulation spaces. The house is conceived as a space for the family’s hospitality. There are shared spaces and private spaces for reflection and relaxation. Just as in a small village there are more private areas and more public areas, in a house it is possible to distinguish the more intimate rooms from the shared ones. Small spatial depressions lead into large urban decompressions and vice versa. This spatial succession, together with chiaroscuro effects and patterns, becomes the guiding principle of the project.
The reinterpretation of these themes transforms the house into a place to explore and identify with. Each individual room can be compared to the dwellings of a small village, while the circulation spaces are like the streets connecting them. The living area becomes the square where people meet and share experiences.
